Fire Razes Customs Western Marine Command Office in Apapa
A fire outbreak has damaged parts of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Western Marine Command office in Apapa, Lagos, destroying property reportedly worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred on Monday morning, September 28, with the fire said to have started at approximately 10:23 a.m. following an electrical surge in the command’s conference room. The flames subsequently spread to other sections of the building.
Customs personnel on duty reportedly made efforts to control the blaze before officers of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at about 10:45 a.m. to assist in putting out the fire.
The incident occurred shortly after Timothy Jonah assumed duty as Deputy Comptroller at the command. Jonah described the development as unfortunate, noting that he had only just resumed when the fire broke out.
According to him, the incident would also provide an opportunity for the command to review and improve its operational and safety measures.
Jonah said a committee would be constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and determine what led to the outbreak.
He also commended the Customs personnel for their prompt response and cooperation with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service during the emergency.
The command said additional safety measures would be introduced to reduce the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future.
The full extent of the damage and the total value of the property destroyed had not been established at the time of reporting.
